The ninth edition builds upon a tradition that dates to 1985 of leveraging the
expertise of dedicated content expert educators who both provide the best
available and guideline-endorsed treatment recommendations and an
understanding of the rationale used to develop them. We have restructured each
chapter to begin with an enumerated list of key points. The chapter text where
the supporting details appear is marked, in the margin, with corresponding
numbers. Key high-quality clinical trials and the best available educational
references are highlighted at the end of each chapter. Our commitment to
providing efficient access to key information includes tabular displays that are
often more efficient than the block text approach of many electronic-only
resources. Many experienced intensivists have also commented that they have
found the tables provided in the chapters to be invaluable when they are
managing uncommon toxic exposures, infrequently encountered diseases, or lifethreatening toxicities of newer agents including those of CAR-T cell therapy that
are all presented in the ninth edition.
As with previous editions, our emphasis remains on evidence-based clinicalmanagement with perspective on disease mechanisms. High-quality clinical
trials and key references are highlighted with color in the Ninth Edition of Irwin
& Rippe’s Intensive Care Medicine. We hope and believe that the outstanding
efforts of the many contributors over the past 5 years have continued to result in
an up-to-date, evidence-based and state-of-the-art and comprehensive textbook
that will guide management and provide a useful educational resource in this
challenging environment.
